Spaces and sharing

A Space is a live feed shared between any number of people. Share a clipboard entry or a note into it and every member sees it in seconds. You can be in several spaces at once, and one item can be in several spaces at once. Everything stays end-to-end encrypted; the server relays ciphertext it cannot read.

Ship the rail at 272 and let people drag it. The old fixed one was too tight for four members.

Launch checklist
Sign the bundles, check both channels, then publish the notes.

Handover

  • Rotate the space key
  • Re-wrap for the four of us

Ship the popup clamp fix first, then the rail. The clamp is the one people hit.

Colour audit
Muted text on surface is 3.1:1. Needs to clear 4.5 before the beta.

You are all caught up
  • Create: click Create on the Spaces screen, type a Space name, and click Create. You become the space’s owner. The checkbox New members can read earlier items is on by default and decides whether people who join later see what was shared before them.
  • Join: click Join, paste into Paste an invite code or link, and click Join. A code or link raises a request to join, not an instant membership, so a forwarded code only lets someone knock. Someone already inside has to let them in. Links open in a browser, so you can send one to a person who does not have the app yet.
  • Invite by email (owner only): type an address into Invite by email and click Send. The person accepts and joins right away, because naming their address is itself the approval. They need an existing account so a key can be prepared for them.
  • Who can approve a code or link request is the owner by default. Turn on Members can approve requests in the space settings to let any member let people in.
A code or link only lets someone ask. A person already in the space lets them in, and an email invite counts as that approval.

Invite codes are 8 characters, expire after 72 hours, and are created once, along with the space. Use Copy code or Copy link to pass one on, and withdraw email invites you sent.

When someone joins, how far back they can read is fixed at that moment. The owner can widen it later: turning on Share earlier items opens everything shared before to every current member. Turning it off only affects people who join after that.

  • By hand: share any entry or selection from the clipboard or notes screen. This is the default and the only path until you opt into more.
  • Share new items out (off by default): per space, auto-share future items matching your choice of content (clipboard, notes, or both), clipboard types, and groups. Changing a filter affects future items only; your history is never shared retroactively.
  • Only the author of a shared item can edit it. Either the author or the space owner can remove it, which takes it out of the feed for everyone; whoever removes it gets a brief undo window.
  • The space feed uses the same cards, search and sorting as your clipboard screen.
  • Copy new items in, per space and per device: anything shared into the space lands directly on your clipboard as it arrives. Only live arrivals can trigger it, never backfill, so it cannot flood you.
  • Comments: discuss any shared item in a popover thread, with mentions.
  • Remove from your devices: delete an item someone shared with you and it goes from all your own devices at once, while it stays in the space for everyone else.
  • Show removed items, per device and on by default: when someone takes an item out of the space, a placeholder marks where it was and who removed it. Turn it off and removed items simply vanish. While it is on, the trash button (Clear placeholders) clears the markers.

The members list shows who is in the space, who is online, and who owns it. Each space has its own key, individually wrapped for every member, so the server never holds a usable key. Any member who has the key can hand it to a newcomer, so you are not stuck waiting for the owner to come online; in the usual case the key arrives with the invite.

The server keeps one locked copy of the space key for each member, and can open none of them.

Removing a member (owner only) mints a fresh key for everyone else. Old keys are kept so old items stay readable.

Each removal adds a new key for the members who are left. Older keys are kept, so earlier items still open.
  • Leave space (members): stops new items reaching you. What you already have stays. It happens on the first click, and an Undo toast gives you 5 seconds to take it back. An owner cannot leave their own space; they can only delete it.
  • Delete space (owner): stops sharing for everyone. Items already on people’s devices stay theirs. The first click changes the button to Confirm delete?, a second click within 3 seconds confirms, and an Undo toast still gives you 5 seconds before the space is gone.
